My Significant Other

The focus for the 2nd week (Jan. 10 – Jan. 16) of the 52 Weeks of Gratitude Challenge was:

Spouse / Significant Other

It is the end of the second week of the 52 weeks of gratitude challenge, and the focus was on our spouse or significant other. While I am still very single (if there’s any such thing as “very” in being single), I thought much about the various people in my life. Each time I tried to come up with who I can call my significant other, one name will pop into my mind: Sommie!

Sommie

We met on Facebook in 2008 or early 2009, but our friendship didn’t really take off until sometime in the year 2010. Thanks to Turkcell for their “2 days free” campaign back then, I was able to enjoy 2 days of unlimited calls in a week and that facilitated our communication.

It wasn’t long before we started talking on the phone everyday, until it got to a time that my days felt incomplete without Sommie! At one time, her boyfriend (5+ years) started to get jealous, but even he knew that he couldn’t come between us and he eventually gave up lol

Each time I thought of Sommie during the week, I tried to dismiss the idea. But I thought about it a little more. There was one day (last year) when I thought that I was actually going to die! That was the evening that I decided to push my limit in jogging.

The Day I Almost Died

After jogging about 800 meters nonstop for the first time, I could not feel my legs! I do not know the medical name for this, but when I stress my legs from running or walking too fast, blood vessels in my legs start to swell and they start to hurt like hell (it’s worse in my right leg).

So I could not feel my legs at all, and I genuinely thought I was going to die. Not only could I not feel my legs, but my right leg started to feel numb! There wasn’t a lot going through my mind at that moment; no life flashing before my eyes. But maybe that was because I actually wasn’t dying lol

Sommie

All I could think of was Sommie! I wanted to call her, and tell her “hey, in case I don’t make it, tell everyone my story!” or something not so epic was what I wanted to tell her. Fortunately though, I did not die (else I would not be writing this right now, right?) Or maybe I died that day, but I just haven’t yet realized it! Oh well!

So out of all my friends, both old and new, Sommie always comes to mind. We are like soulmates, when I think about us, and it is only fitting that I thought about her when we were asked to focus on our spouse or significant other.

Highlights of My Year

When I looked through photo highlights of my 2015, I saw that the times I got to spend with Sommie, all made it into the highlights of my year. Despite the fights and big arguments (which always brought us closer), we still remain just as close friends till right now, and I’m sure she will have something to say about this, if she gets to read it.

What about your spouse or significant other?

Please tell us about them in the comment section below. Thanks

7 things I was grateful for during the 2nd week of this 52 weeks of gratitude challenge:

  1. I spoke longer than I thought, and still didn’t finish all I had for the day. According to the few people who thanked me personally, I gave a good lecture. So I am grateful for the success of my lecture/teaching in church today, and its perceived impact
  2. Thank God for BackandFront, my second source of income
  3. Yesterday, I started work on the Nigerian Blog Reviews project. I’m happy I was able to finish designing the main landing page.
  4. I know I can be stubborn at times, but I’m grateful for the common sense to learn something new out of new and old situations, sometimes
  5. The fact that I’m still single, is evidence that I did not end up with the wrong person, and that’s something to be grateful for. Marriage is a life-long commitment, and so it would suck to end up with the wrong person, until death
  6. I really needed rest today, so I’m grateful I got to sleep enough during the day
  7. I thank God I am still single because that gives me more time to work on myself, while I find my significant other
